Day 716 - Baseball Cancelled
Yesterday MLB made the decision to cancel opening day and postpone the start of the season. They did this also in 2020, but that was because of the pandemic. This is because they can't collectively agree on paychecks.
That might be a little unfair, or at least trivializing the issue. But, it is fairly because players and owners can't reach agreements on things like minimum salaries, bonuses, revenue sharing, and other money things. None of the articles or media I've seen, or news bullets I've heard have been around anything else, like player safety, schedule burden, rule changes, or many other things I could think to want to maybe change.
It's a little hard to feel bad for people who are paid at least a half-million dollars a year to play a game. It's really hard to feel bad for those who make multiple millions per year. I get wanting to be treated fairly in your peer group, but those are some bitter numbers to try to align with some sense of discord.
As a baseball fan, though, I do miss when baseball isn't available. We unplugged from cable a long time ago, and with it went our ability to watch most games; really the only thing we miss from cable is live sports. As a season ticket owner, in normal times I get to see enough baseball. It's gotten a little harder, though, as the kids are old enough to go and enjoy the games, too. They don't like the games for as long as it takes to get through them, though, so it isn't as much joy with them as it is without them.
I guess this'll mean another missing or short season. It'll give me some time to work on my fantasy baseball app some more before the season starts...if I ever get the time to work on it at all.
Everyone's healthy.
