Planting More Grass Seed
The front yard is still a mess. The seed I sprinkled around early in the season doesn't seem to have taken.
The weed prevention worked, as there are significantly fewer weeds, but that comes with bald spots that were green before. Unfortunately, the weed prevention also prevents the clover I planted last year from coming back. I liked the clover, as it came in fast and thick, but it isn't as tidy as grass, growing in bunches of clumps, leading to a lumpy looking yard. I'm ambivalent about it now.
I took to the bigger bare spots with the Garden Weasel, giving it a couple inches of tilling. Alas, we've had the Weasel for so long that whatever was holding the head on has given way, so it pops off occasionally. I'd never noticed before, but it's just a handle stuck into a tapered opening. There's no threads or nubs, or any kind of hole through which a screw might hold the head. There must have been some adhesive that wore off over the last 20 years or so that I've had the thing. As long as the use is generally smooth, flat, and has downward pressure, it stays put. Occasionally, a snag of roots will grab it, and then some resetting is necessary.
After I got a good amount of soil broken, I took the last of my soil-rebuilding seed starter and sprinkled it over the tilled bits, and tossed some of the extra on thin spots I didn't till. I then took a rake to all of them and mixed the seed beneath the top.
It's supposed to rain this evening and much of the day tomorrow, off and on, so maybe that'll help it get a good start.
