Adventure Marshall Islands - Day 43
Saturday, July 2
Today we broke out for something different and had breakfast at the Flame Tree. It's just down the road from the hotel, and we've seen the “breakfast on the deck” sign many times as we've driven past, but haven't been as adventurous as we could have been, until today.
It's definitely a bar, with bar tables and pool tables. They have a few tables on the deck which overhangs the front door and parking, and overlooks the street and lagoon side of things. There was one other woman on the deck, and a couple of guys inside playing pool. We chose a bigger table for the three of us, and were promptly joined by the waitress, who cooed with Grace while we looked over the breakfast menu.
They had a typical fare, with eggs and meats and pancakes, which is just what I ordered. The food was pretty good. I'd ordered my eggs cooked scrambled (restaurant safest, if you ask me) with a little onion in it, but it came more onion than egg. The pancakes were probably third best on the island so far, which isn't to say they were bad, but since I've only had pancakes at three places, it doesn't place well. We didn't get a warm-up on our coffee. After receiving our food, in fact, we didn't see the waitress again.
The scenery was nice, and there was a little breeze, so the temperature made the deck pleasant. Grace didn't like the breeze, though, and after a little bit had enough and started protesting. We found the waitress hanging out in the kitchen, and she cheerfully took our cash offering and we were on our way. We had a couple errands we needed to do.
We went to the NTA to get some more Internet cards, having run out this morning checking e-mail before we left. We went there thinking to get the $20 cards, but all they had were $5 cards, so I got a stack of them. I'm baiting the universe by trying to have an excessive amount, but I think the universe is seeing through my trick, because my back-up plan is to donate them to our birth-family if we have some that aren't used up.
After that we went to the EZ Price Mart to get another thing of diapers. We arrived with just short of 200, bought about another 160, and have run out. We knew we'd probably need a few more than we brought, but didn't think we'd need as many as we've since purchased. I also got some probably too-small socks, as the few pair I did bring don't seem to last with as often as I'm wearing shoes instead of my sandals. The only socks they have are the 9-11 size, but they never seem to fit my 10-13 (depending on the shoe) feet. Yeah, big hands, big feet...big gloves, big shoes...and socks.
Then we stopped by the Payless for some bottle liners. Again, we brought plenty, bought more, and then have bought even more. I also grabbed a 12-pack of Coke and some more plastic cups to bring with to the island tomorrow.
We returned to the room, now sweltering in the late morning heat, with a plan to do laundry and lounging in the air conditioning. Claire took the laundry charge this time, waiting with Uncle Sam as she let the machines do their things. She stopped in a few times to check on me, and to make sure that Grace was still sleeping. She wasn't really checking to see if Grace was still sleeping, but it was the case that Grace was sleeping every time she checked.
Early chores and laundry took long enough that we thought to make our way to an early dinner. We hit the restaurant downstairs, and spent a little time chatting with bubu. We returned to the room, too early to give up and turn in, but too late to try to find something else to do (with child in tow), so we plugged in the DVD and watched some of The Big Bang Theory episodes. There was a Grace-prompted intermission as she needed a feeding before turning in for the night, during which I ran for some ice cream to top off the day. We finished our DVD and ice cream, and turned in for the night.
