Day 411 - Constitution Day and Bike Shopping
We started the day as we do most Saturdays, with swim lessons, and then spent the rest of the day looking for replacement bikes for the kids.
Oh, the Constitution Day is because today is the anniversary of the 1979 adoption of the constitution in the Marshall Islands. We've got a little bit of a family tie there, and it's celebrated a little like the US 4th of July there. We're not there, so some mention of its importance is about all we do here. In the past, we've celebrated with our Marshallese friends, but with the pandemic, not so much.
We did stop for lunch outside, because it was warm and sunny. Pandemic and all, the restaurant had well-spaced seating, we were the first there, and finished before the patio was more than half full. There was too much food on everyone's plate, and we didn't have to cook or wash up any of it; so wins all around.
We then went to a couple of bike shops to check out some new bikes for the kids. The bigger little has just plain outgrown her bike (probably did a year ago, but new pandemic...), and the little little is just about to out grow the bigger little's bike, even if he did want to ride the princess styled bike. So we set out to look at some 20-inch and 24-inch bikes.
After some time at the little bike shop, we found the big little a bike at the bigger bike shop. A spendy drop of hard earned cash later, and they said they'd have it ready for us tomorrow. We decided to hold off on getting a bike for the little little, since he hasn't yet ridden without trainers on, and we can get him over that hurdle on the hand-me-down bike, princess styles and all. Maybe we'll throw some sports tape on the frame to avoid any gender-bias concerns.
We settled in for some dinner, and the missus noticed a bike like we'd been considering, but for about 20% of the cost, half of what the used one we considered cost. We arranged to pick it up, and headed over. On the way, she shared who was selling the bike; I used to work with him, as he lead the product group for which I led the engineering group. A nice reconnect, some time poking at the bike, and some Venmo action, and we were off with yet another new (to our little) bike.
We'll need to focus on getting good without training wheels, and handling a bike a lot bigger than the starter bike he's been using. But, really, what are summers for, if not busting out some new biking skills?
Everyone is healthy.
