Day 656 - It's So Cold Out There
This morning is cold enough to hurt. And cold enough to do the boiling pot of water becomes snow trick!
On waking up, the clock warned it was -16°F. The forecast warned me today would be cold, with a high around 3°F. By the time I turned on my computer, it had warmed a little bit.
\ / Sunny .-. -14(-25) °F ― ( ) ― ↗ 4 mph `-’ 9 mi / \ 0.0 in
Note with the wind that's -25°F. I feel for anyone who has to be outside in that. Note I grabbed that using a little tool called wttr.in which I aliased for my command line to allow me to type "weather" and see what it's like outside. Here's what it says the weather is like now (with a link you could steal if you wanted your own):
The missus and littles were filling coffee cups with boiling water and flinging the contents into the air. When it's about -15°F, much (or all, if you start high enough) of the water will freeze in the air. You can throw not-boiling water in the air and some of it will freeze, but usually that's a disappointing splat. You have to toss with some vigor to get a big "spray" of water, too, or you'll also just end up with a blob of water flying through the air. Because boiling water is pushing that boundary between liquid and vapor, tossing it into the air helps spread the water blobs and free the vapor, which then hits the seriously cold air and crystalizes, causing a small, but pretty fluttering arc of snow.
As expected, the success of the arc improved with the tosser's age. Also as expected, it was cold enough no one wanted to be out doing that for very long. This is is probably the extent of going outside today. We're wimps, it's true. Once inside, the kids grabbed their tablets, and disappeared to quiet parts of the house so they could play or watch without headphones on.
Nothing more exciting is planned for the day. Maybe some cleaning and other household maintenance.
Everyone's healthy.
