Spring Break 2026 - Day 1
We flew to Puerto Rico today to start a week of vacation.
The kids are young enough it isn't that kind of spring break. Just a week without school, where we've decided to slip away to somewhere tropical while the weather at home works its way from winter to spring, with its wild weather swings from arctic to tropic every few days.
We started our adventure over the weekend, packing and preparing. This morning we shook off the cobwebs at 5AM to load up and head out to the airport. The travel was uneventful, ending with our arrival at the hotel in the early afternoon. We settled in the room, changed into hot-weather clothes, and set out to find a spot near the pool. The kids swam while the adults thawed and chilled with some tasty piña coladas, as they were out of mint to make mojitos. We ate poolside and settled in when it started to get apparent people were tired, even though the sun hadn't started setting yet.
The room is nice enough, very much like the last Hyatt we stayed in when we visited Kauai. Ours is on the end of the property, and while it's supposed to be "garden view," we look out at palm-tree leaves level at a small grove of trees before the property fence and unimproved land beyond. There's a privacy wall on the balcony, so when you're sitting in the rockers on the deck, as I am now, you can't see through the wall, but instead look up and see the palm fronds rustling in the breeze exposing the stars beyond.
We don't have a grand plan. We've held off on visits lately because there's a bit too much hanging at the hotel and pool for the missus, and not enough encouraging participation on excursions from the kiddos. I've talked with them about at least trying to be interested in the other things, so we'll see how it goes.
At the very least, it's wonderfully warm and the air is clear.
