Spring Break 2026 - Over
We're back from vacation, the kids are at school, and the adults are doing the usual things.
Travel home was uneventful. Long, but uneventful.
We checked out of the hotel before our 11AM check-out time. We finished packing and cleaning everything up, dressing for our destination, before setting out for breakfast. We vacillated on whether to bring our bags and leave after breakfast, or do breakfast and return for our bags. We decided that even with the buffet there wasn't enough time to walk, eat, walk back, and return to the lobby before 11AM, so we brought our bags. On the walk to the lobby we discussed whether to bring the bags to breakfast (we'd seen others do the same) or leave them with the lobby or valet. Instead we decided to just check out and go, and look for breakfast on the route, or at worst at the airport.
We made our way to this funny little place called Chupacabras about halfway between the hotel and airport. It is a cute little diner, with maybe a dozen tables, all in a setting like you're in someone's kitchen. The walls are lined with pictures that have chupacabras in them. The food was delicious, if just a little slow (which we only noticed because we had an airport to get to). The kids kept pointing out that all the chupacabra photos looked AI generated, and wouldn't consider that a person could create such things.
After breakfast we headed to the airport. We went on a little bit of an adventure looking for gas. I tried to anticipate the last gas station on the highway we were on before we hit the bigger freeway before the airport. I missed the last one. And then I missed the next exit with an obvious gas station next to it, so I took the next exit, figuring we were close enough to urban areas that they shouldn't be too hard to find. It was a little hard to find, but after a while I did. We got gassed up and carried on.
We got to the airport, returned the car, and made it through the USDA check fast enough. The Jet Blue ticketing was on the very end, which took a bit to find. Their kiosk wouldn't let us check in, so we had to wait in line to get help from an agent. That just took a while, and of course made the kids antsy. They charged us a little for our big bag, which turned out to be a few pounds overweight, but we just went with the fee, and they "gate checked" the kids' bags for free for us, which was nice, and made it less painful to pay for the overweight bag.
We made our way through security quickly, thanks to Clear, and found our way to the gate. We grabbed some snacks and boarded. The flight to Newark was uneventful. We found the lounge there and had some small dinner things. We jumped in the connection home. The flight was uneventful, too, and the kids both had a little nap.
We landed, collected our bags, found our Uber, and made it home before midnight. Everyone tucked in pretty quickly.
The kids made it out for school without much fuss. I wandered about for a bit and have a plan to do some laundry and check out whatever needs to be fixed on the computers, or whatever chores need to be done. We'll see how the day unfolds.
