Spring Break 2026 - Day 6
The last full day here, so we headed out for some looking around, eventually.
Mom caved and we went for breakfast at the buffet again. It was just as fine as before, and is probably one of the more expensive meals we have, especially for as little as we actually eat. She had a couple things she wanted to do on her computer after, so we stayed in the room for a bit longer after breakfast. There's a dance thing at a festival in San Juan she wants to see, the plan going to cross the island and take a look around in the afternoon.
Around lunchtime we took off. The drive across the island was pleasant enough. Busy for a Saturday, I thought, but it's a busy place. We reached Old San Juan easy enough, and then the heavy traffic set in for real. Of course, because of the festival it was crowded, on top of the normal tourist traffic, I'm sure.
We went to the parking ramp identified as the one closest to our target, but it was full. Cars were coming out, but they weren't letting more in. I orbited the block once to see if that would change, but it did not. We zig-zagged across the area to another parking ramp, but I accidentally pulled into the one next to the one we'd identified. It was fine, and turned out to be a good mistake, because as we reached the street again I could make out that the entrance to the one we intended to reach was blocked as it was also full.
One downside to this spot is that it's a dozen blocks of twists and turns and hills to get to where we were going. As we were driving around, the kids identified some places they wanted to reach, but they hadn't mentioned it as we passed nor tried to remember a path back. It would have been a different path on foot anyway, but having the names of places would have allowed us to search for them. There were desires for bathrooms, so we found one in a Marshall's store.
There were lots of complaints about hungers and thirsts and so much hot, so we tried to wander a bit for a friendly place with space and something the kids might eat. We found a spot with room and sat down. The kids were over the top and fussed, which pushed mom over the top so she stepped away. I ordered some cokes for the kids and I and some cheese stick appetizer. Mom returned after a bit and got a piña colada. With a little rest and a cool drink, tempers settled and we were able to move on.
We found the festival. The daughter and I queued up at a food truck and waited for her to get a burger and fries. After, the boyo and I bought a kite and flew it for a bit on the field in the fort with all the other kite flyers. After that the kids got a couple snow cones. Mom was spent, and the kids were losing their steam, so we decided to head back. There was a little resistance to leaving, but it settled quickly as they remembered the trek to get to the fort.
We got back to the hotel shortly after dark. No one was fit for a restaurant, so some snacks were fetched from the Market, and later dinner was decided from room service.
I settled on the deck and finished Dungeon Crawler Carl. It's really good and you should read it (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BX5D4LC for the interested, buy it wherever). I'm going to go inside and help finish packing for travel tomorrow, and shower off some of the sweat from wandering around today.
