Day Seventy-Five - May Ends with Summery Sunday
The overnight police force seemed to have quelled much of the mayhem. Saturday night was not peaceful, by any means, but no news of terrible clashes or more fires greeted us in the morning.
Still, tension in the air. More governor's briefings. More uncertainty.
We tried to make just a Sunday. We took a trip to a drive-in restaurant, and had a meal somewhere other than home for the first time in seventy-some days. It seemed like a weird thing to hold celebrate. We have used drive-through and take-out a few times a week, especially when weary of cooking three times a day, or when in need of a kid-friendly special, or if groceries are starting to get thin.
I also ran to the garden store for some mulch to finally finish the dog area I started cleaning yesterday. Four or so inches of clean, dry(ish) mulch where very much needed. The dogs dug it, and didn't waste any time adding waste. This should hopefully keep them from peeing and pooing in the grass. Now we need to get back into a routine of keeping it poo-cleared fresh.
Did some laundry and lawn mowing, too. A pretty normal Sunday, really. The lunch out really did add some "normal" to it.
The overnight police presence brought some different discussion to the now-regular press conferences. A sway through "why did you wait" into "isn't that too much," were both bandied in at least the bit of the one I watched. The governor reminded the press and people that there were processes and logistics and things that needed to happen. Hindsight is easy. As near as we can tell, no one has been killed by the police, although one man was killed by a shop owner on Wednesday.
In addition to the curfew, freeways throughout the city were announced to be closed starting at 5PM. Not long after, a big-rig hauling a tanker trailer apparently raced into a crowd of protesters on the freeway. I'm sure it'll come out later, but it didn't seem that anyone was hurt. The driver was quickly removed, apparently protected by police. This enraged the Internet, but I shouted "remember poor Reginald Denny," who was attacked in the LA riots for simply driving through an intersection. I'm not sure it's as conspiracy as many believe, but it was pretty scary in the moment, and seemed pretty suspicious. Was he in error? Did he do it on purpose? Was it part of a different plan?
We turned off the news tonight, and watched a little Star Trek: Discovery, which we just started last week. Pretty good, although they do rush from calamity to calamity a bit fast. Like six episodes in and they've already left the alternate universe...spoilers...heh.
Everyone is healthy.
