Mid-day Seventy-Six - Quiet Monday
After an uproarious weekend, things seem to have settled to a bit more normal for now.
The only riot news from overnight was the tanker that "plowed through the crowd of protesters." I don't mean to defend, but I also don't want to join the rhetoric. Seeing the traffic cam video, you can see the crowd disperse before the truck appears. As the truck enters the frame, you can see it's trying to slow, which can be difficult in a vehicle that size at any speed. He stops in the crowd, despite an clearing path, swerving to avoid people on the ground. The crowd swarms the truck, and evidently pulled the driver from the cab and began beating him, Reginald Denny style.
Other videos show the police rescuing the driver. In one scathing Twitter post, the tweeter decries the police using pepper spray to move the protesters, but many of the protesters are clearly trying to engage and are throwing things, despite the presence of police.
The driver has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing. Here's a link showing both the MnDOT video and another view from someone's Twitter of them removing and attacking driver.
I hope it all turns out to be a mistake. He drove on an empty road until suddenly a mob appeared in it. He did his professional best to stop and save lives. I get the reaction of the crowd, because that must have been horrifying. But very few people are allowing for this to be a mistake.
As the workday draws nigh, we're going to set up a big inflatable pool for the kids in the back yard. Hopefully it works, 'cause it's gonna be hot for the next few days.
So far, everyone's healthy.
