Rebound (2005)
I took a half-day from work today and thought to stop and see a movie.
I had planned to see the Adam Sandler remake of The Longest Yard, as the wife had already seen it, but it had started too long before, and I didn't want to wait until the next showing. The other films I was really interested in were Batman Begins and War of the Worlds, but I knew the wife'd want to see them. I've already seen Star Wars, so the only other choice, by time and interest, was Martin Lawrence's Rebound.
It's a come-back feel-good movie about a never-was who somehow made it big, largely by way of endorsements, who lost it all, and had to find his way again. Martin Lawrence plays a college basket ball coach who made his mark by having a phenomenal college career. Never played pro, we learn, he went straight to coaching. Additionally, he's apparently a horrible coach, never having a winning season. He's also a hot-head, and gets ejected from a lot of games. It's probably his colorful characteristics and general charisma that got him the endorsements that brought him his fame...
After embarrassing his school by killing their mascot, he's ejected from the league, and is forced to try to make amends. He brings a small team of inner-city kids to the state championship, in the meantime finding his groove again.
Well put together, plenty of visual comedy, and teenage team building. Not quite Mighty Ducks, but the same idea.
