Independence Day (1996)
No, not the national holiday...the movie.
It's turning into a classic, this 1996 film wherein Will Smith helps Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman save the human race from annihilation at the hands of interstellar locusts.
In case you've passed by this one at the rental store, aliens show up in massive space ships and hover above major cities around the world. Dave (Goldblum) determines that a disruption in the satellite television signals is actually an countdown to when the alien attack begins. He eventually convinces the President of the United States (Pullman) to leave the White House, and they narrowly escape the devastation. On the other side of the country, Marine fighter pilot Steve (Smith) has a first encounter of the hands-on kind with an alien fighter. Everyone ends up in Area 51 where they discover a way to defeat the invaders, thanks to (MIT-educated doctor turned cable guy) Dave's idea of infecting the alien vessel with a virus. Just think what that'd be like today; every teen in Germany would be on it...
I swear I own it on DVD, but we couldn't find it on the shelf, so instead we settled for the version on television. Initially, when we scanned past and thought to find it, I thought to toss the disk in and watch it in its widescreen glory. Alas, it wasn't to be.
