Just Married (2003)
Yet another NetFlix film sitting around for a little too long. We put it in with not-so-high hopes, and were pleasantly surprised.
You've seen the entire premise in the commercials and trailers before other movies, to be sure. Boy and girl get married, have horrible honeymoon, and return certain to dissolve the marriage. Of course, Hollywood wouldn't give us that ending, so spoiler warnings aside, they do get back together.
Of course, that isn't the crux of the movie. The movie's set up with a recall-timeline. That is, the near-end comes first, and the rest of the film is presented by way of recollection. A little "how we met" first, and then the bulk of the film in one big flashback.
Brittany Murphy makes the film. She's fliberty-gibit enough to make you think she's real. Her characters tend to be believable and pretty unique, and this one is no different. She's obviously smarter, secure, and more well-rounded than her boyfriend turned husband. Although, in true Hollywood fashion, she's the one passively waiting for him to come to her. Stands up to her family just fine, but caves into submission with her man.
Ashton Kutcher could be just about any male actor; I generally think that about him--he's one of those guys that has the same character. I think it's his dimwit look. Not just the one when he's playing shocked, stunned, or dumbfounded. The same one he has when he's listening intently, staring blankly, or seriously contemplating the plot. Aside from that distraction, his character is a pretty good rendition of a typical guy. He means well, he's just trying to fit in and present a solid foundation, and he gets flustered and lost in the gears that turn the world around him.
Nearly all of the funny bits revolve around Murphy. Kutcher tries, but does better as the straight man and fall guy. Her suave, cultured presentation far outweighs his bumbling every man.
It's pretty much fall-down, face-slap, awkward situation comedy. A little depth in the characters, but really only enough to set up the situations. The settings are colorful, and the situations fairly common, but overall it's a good, clean chuckle.
Recommend for a rental (especially where you're not specifically paying for it...), or if you've got a couple hours to kill when it's on television. Maybe worth the time to Tivo.
