Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
This old flick about a guy born in the manger across the way from Jesus brought back some high school chuckles, and made me wonder what I saw in Monty Python.
OK, so some of the comedy is dated. Well, dated back to biblical times, I suppose. There's a lot of politically incorrect jabs in there, but not too much of it provoking thought.
I might just be getting old, but I found myself thinking the bulk of the movie was mean.
Sure, the resistance committee was funny. All talk and no action. Still seems to be the case.
The unwanted messiah bit was OK. Brian knew he wasn't the messiah, but because he knowingly babbled nonsense and made one decent half-statement, leaving the crowd wanting more, they decided he was.
The caeser with the lisp was annoying, not so funny.
The overly gregarious and optimistic Eric Idle character at the end was a bit of a hoot.
Not a bad rental. Made me wonder if my memories of the other films were as hazy and if they're any good any more. I remember liking Monty Python, and I like the bits of the shows when I happen upon them on cable. I think I'll be sad if I find I don't like them any more.
