Renamed LAN Hosts
After some time (read many years), I decided to try to do something about the DNS difficulties of not having hosts on the LAN know each other by name.
I added a DNS server, the new multi-homed Solaris server who also looks up Internet addresses for me, and named the LAN hosts with the .local extension. A little tweak of the DHCP server settings, and now everyone's got a new domain name on the LAN.
One small hiccup on the Solaris 9 servers as I changed the DNS to look to the new server. Applying the change to the network settings resulted in the server trying to use the address associated with the WAN address. This, of course, doesn't work as the servers are behind the firewall, and the WAN address is IP on the other side of the firewall. A trip to the server room and hands-on the console, and all is well.
There are a couple of outstanding leases on some of the devices (PS3 and laptops) that will need to be renewed for those to change. I might need to attend to a couple of the other devices manually, 'though I expect the print server doesn't much care about DNS, really.
Now, to do this on the new server's zones, which was really the catalyst for making this change.
