Always Innovating Touchbook
Coming close to my Mobile PC Wishlist, the Always Innovating Touchbook starts to come close.
Driven by a low-power ARM processor, it boasts 10-15 hours of run-time. It's got a flash-based, instant-on design, so depending on what one is doing, that could mean simply 10-15 hours of "unplugged time."
It's got a smaller, 8.9-inch (1024x600 pixel) touch screen, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Their FAQ mentions thinking about external video, but doesn't commit either way. Knowing that this is meant as a device "between" a cellphone or PDA and a laptop or desktop, it is an acceptable compromise.
It is detachable from its (actually optional) keyboard dock, hides some of the USB ports internally, allowing personal expansion without risk of breaking or losing the various devices. It seems that one could forgo the extra hundred bucks and use an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard, as there are external USB ports, and it does have Bluetooth.
At $299, it is pushing the price-point of small, dumb laptop. Alas, I think this might be a hard pill to swallow. I suppose if I compare it instead to my $400 smart-phone, then it's a deal...
What I'd really like, now that I've thought about it a little more and poked around some, is something more akin to the Amazon Kindle (look it up yourself) in size and format, but that does some real computer stuff as well as just read books.
