Movie: Whip It (2009)
This little flick is one little part coming-of-age, mixed with one big part roller derby, blended to make an entertaining quasi-action comedy film.
Director (and supporting actress) Drew Barrymore busts out a good debut film (directing debut, not acting, obviously), Whip It, about a bored high school girl, "Bliss," played by Ellen Page, who is quietly at odds with her mother's penchant for pageants, and finds she has a knack for roller derby.
Whip It hits the coming of age bits hard (pun attempted), as Bliss, known as "Babe Ruthless" in the derby, has to break away from everything she's been and known in order to find herself. She brings her BFF and parents along for the ride.
It hits roller derby not quite as hard, probably tamed down for the audience, but much of Bliss' angst and growth is brought out in derby action. The derby gals are a bigger part of the hoot in the film, and are a great contrast to her otherwise serene home life.
The movie's packed with medium-sized star power, with Berrymore as derby teammate "Smashley Simpson," derby adversary "Maggie Mayhem" played by Juliet Lewis, parents Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern, a handful of other recognizable actors, including SNL cast members.
If you're looking for a quiet little "feel good" movie, with a little bit of literal knock-down action, twisted with some flaky humor, and interjected with occasional life-is-hard reminders, this one might fit the bill.
