CenturyLink DSL Cancelled
It's been over a decade that we've had this service, forgiving the interruption when they installed the fiber, but it's been unplugged for a while, so today I called to cancel.
Except for having slower than fiber speeds, the service was good enough for most things. The fiber is much faster and only negligibly more expensive.
I got CenturyLink's fiber service when it was made available in my neighborhood, with promises that everything I did with the DSL could happen with the fiber. That turned out to not be true, so I had to struggle a little with them to get both, but eventually did. There was always the promise that the service would come. It did not.
When US Internet put their fiber literally in my front yard, I had that installed as soon as it was available and got the static IPs to be able to replace the DSL. I got that configured, unplugged the other gear, and just dragged my feet to disconnect the services. I did the Quantum a week or so ago, and the DSL today.
I have no negatives about either service, save the bit about static IPs. If you don't need static IPs, the fiber offered by Quantum was reliable and fast. If you don't need the speed or do want static IPs, the DSL from CenturyLink also did well. Both come with edge gear allowing you to use their WiFi or plug into their devices easily enough. They're open enough to let you put your touches on your LAN, if you need to.
Thanks for the service, CenturyLink. It's bittersweet to let you go.
