Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (1999)
This documentary-style comedy came via Netflix recommendation.
I'm not sure I can pass the favor.
It's a light romance comedy in the form of a documentary narrated by David Hyde Pierce (Niles from NBC's Fraiser). It has the obligatory misinterpretation of activities between a couple in their pursuit of togetherness.
A not-bad looking dull guy meets a hot chick (Carmen Electra) in a pub, and with huge cajones gets her number, looses her number, calls all of the "J Smith"s in the phone book until they finally get together. They go through the common phases, with all of the documentary-like focus on mating. Well, it is in the title, after all.
Lots of made-for-TV sex and mildly comical men-dressed-in-sperm-suits asides, and the tale of human mating rituals is told. Well, at least young adult American human mating rituals.
The characters were bland. The chick was surely hot (duh), but the acting was a little plastic. Lucy Liu (Charlie's Angels and Kill Bill) was the other big star on screen (we never see Hyde Pierce, not even in a cameo), but she had a bit part, wherein she merely supported or contradicted the lead.
The best parts were the incorrect interpretations of actions, which we all saw differently.
The fun poked at the rituals is fun poked at the stuff we all loathe or appreciate in our dating games. The movie was amusing, and if it happened to be on television one might find it worthwhile, or even through something like Netflix that you're paying for anyway. It may be a cult classic that I just didn't get.
