The Full Monty (1997)
Another film delivered by Netflix.
I know few people read this blog, and that Netflix does nothing for referrals, but it's easy, inexpensive, and they have brought some winners (and some losers) to the door.
This one is a winner.
Of course, it's a cult classic, introducing the phrase "the full Monty" into our everyday vernacular. I couldn't recall actually seeing the film before, so I queued it up. The wife was certain that we'd seen it together, but I'm sure we didn't. After seeing it, I know I was right; I hadn't seen the film before--just the parody on the Drew Carey Show.
In case you haven't seen it either, it's a film about a couple of blokes who live in a formerly prosperous steel milling town, which has since gone belly-up, and good jobs are hard to find. After some discussion about the women folk who've gone nuts over a recent strip show that passed through town, they decide they can do the same. Through some connections and interview, trials and errors, and some comical situations, they work out a routine, find a venue, get a little backing from the local beer man, and set out to perform their all-out show.
They find themselves bonding and transformed, and by the end of the film they all have a new perspective. The journey is relatively short, and our main characters, and verily the supporting characters, are all relatively deep and well portrayed.
Definite thumbs-up.
