New Dog Doesn't Get Daylight Savings
We got a new dog about a month ago, and while he's settling in nicely, we realized that he doesn't quite get the end of Daylight Savings Time.
In September, our dog Sport died. Shortly after we started getting all kinds of "I know someone with puppies" or "I know a dog that needs a good home" mentions from friends or e-mail circles. The wife also was looking at rescuing another dog from the local Humane Society. It happened that through a round about e-mail a woman in Colorado was trying to help her son in our area find a good home for his five-year old dog. We agreed and contacted and met them and the dog, and after a few days of sleep-over we decided he'd fit right in.
He's a pretty good dog. Not meant to be a direct replacement for Sport, but it turns out that he looks a lot like him. Both dogs are jet black with a little white scruffy beard-looking hair on their chins, and a white stripe between the front legs like the dog is wearing a tie. Sport was a Black Lab and something else, and Jet, the new dog, is a Pointer of some kind and something else, in that order. Sport was well overweight at just about 100 pounds until just before the end, while Jet's a svelte 70 pounds and a good six inches taller, and all of that is in the legs.
There were a few mannerisms that were similar as well. We have an old table in the middle of our kitchen that we use as a kind of an island, and both dogs would stand beneath the table and look out at us while wagging their tails, thumping some rhythm to get our attention. Both the wife and I called Jet "Sport" on separate occasions, quickly correcting ourselves and humorously relaying the anecdote to the other later. On just a very small number of other occasions, "Sport and Daisy" would fall out of our mouths when we talked about both dogs.
It's been a while since that's happened, and we've also noticed that our comparisons between the two have waned. Jet is Jet, and Sport, as much as we miss him, is not Jet. We get it. Knew it from the beginning, and are finally used to saying "Jet" when we need to.
