Blast From the Past
No, not the movie by a similar name, although I do find that amusing. Instead, a long ago friend made a comment on one of my long ago posts.
At the reunion, I looked for a few familiar faces; I think the deeper pages of the post mentioned that. Quick recap... I was pleased to see a few. A few more than I recognized recognized me. A few I recognized, I didn't bother interrupting with a "how do." That last made me later think that there may have been some who might have enjoyed the interruption, much like I did from those that I didn't necessarily recognize.
There were a core of friends I was hoping to find in part or in whole, as I mentioned in that previous, terse as it was, post. One of those that wasn't there (or that I didn't recognize and didn't recognize or find me) has since noticed his name on my entry and left a comment this last Christmas Eve.
Jeff Kivi was the second guy in the group that I'd met. I met Jon Martignacco first through a fella that quickly fell away, Kyle Pennington. Wonder what happened to him... Anyway, Kyle and I got paired up in some class when I first moved to the area. He and Jon lived near each other, but neither near me. Jon later introduced me to Jeff.
Through Jon and Jeff, Mike and Stu were also met, and we, in my recollection, became a pretty solid group of friends. We were typical high school dorks. You know the type; did our homework, good at math, played a variety of wargames. Video games were just coming into homes, and we played what we could. Got together regularly for nearly all-night-long game playings, putting many Risk boards together to make a large planet, or making long, drawn out space combats in the turn-based Star Fleet Battles, or even trying a number of role playing games, yes, including D&D, but more often something much more complex.
Jeff's one of the last of that group that I saw after I returned from serving in the Air Force. Jon and I were quite regular before I enlisted, as we were roommates.
Having a wife and kids and all that stuff a bit earlier than everyone else put a different spin on my life, and the whole group and I just drifted in different directions. Funny now that everyone else is having or has recently had kids...I'm having grandkids ahead of schedule now...
I'll give Jeff a ping. Looks like he's the same guy, 'cept with a goatee. Probably isn't, because, of course, looks mean nothing. It'll be interesting to hook up with him and see how the years have been going for him.
Cool to hear from him whether we connect or not.
