I'm not a fan of the new president.
His day one plans weren't everything he promised on the campaign. Of course, a lot of it was likely hyperbole and reasonably impossible to accomplish. He did make a lot of noise and threw out a bunch of expected to be contested executive orders, though. Too many to go over without getting mad, but here are a few to remember.
He issued across the board pardons for all of the convicted and charged January 6, 2020 insurrectionists. He had promised to do this, but with some care, as some of them had done dramatic harm or damage. There are fair arguments that some of them have been in jail or prison for a couple years now, which for some of the things is probably arguably reasonable. There were some who "merely" trespassed and followed the crowd chanting their vile messages, that didn't really break or steal anything or otherwise hurt people.
He put a pause on the TikTok shutdown. I don't know if he remembers making the promise to end TikTok in his first presidency. He certainly didn't appreciate everything that went into the analysis and bi-partisan cancellation of TikTok. He seemed only interested in maintaining the popular app and stopping the cries of unfair by its users. Realistically, any number of similar apps have or could be written by so many people, myself included. The hard part stopping me is that I don't see value in it (clearly the advertising makes a boatload of money, though), and I'm not sure how to legally license the music snippets used within.
He "renamed" the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Of course, this only impacts government systems in their labeling of the geography. Similarly, he reverted the name of Mount McKinley in Alaska from its more recent reversion to its more original Mount Denali by Obama.
He made a bunch of immigration-related orders. He declared a national emergency at the border with Mexico, pledging to send troops to help support border agents and defend its weak spots. He ended some refugee programs and some other programs the Biden and other previous administrations put in to try to alleviate some of the difficulties immigrants face.
He also withdrew from the Paris climate agreements and WHO. He put a stop to wind turbine (he said "windmills," heh) leases and development offshore, pushing for more oil and coal instead.
He formally empowered the DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency, kind of. I think there are more hoops than his declaration to create a new agency, since the budgets and such are technically for Congress to assign.
He killed some protections for gender diversity, going so far as to declare that the federal government will only recognize the binary, by birth, genders, depending on whether you were born with eggs or sperm bits. He put a stop to the government DEI programs, and put all of the federal workers working on those programs on paid leave.
Probably most audacious is that he created an executive order attempting to put a stop to "birthright citizenship," which is guaranteed in the 14th amendment, and has been upheld in multiple SCOTUS cases. His EO isn't really enough to end it, but it can cause some turmoil for a while. This will surely be quickly stomped on with legal challenges. To truly overturn this will take either a SCOTUS reinterpretation and evacuation of previous rulings, or a new amendment (or update to the current one, I suppose).
What he also promised, but was unable to do, was in one day end the war in Ukraine and drop consumer prices. I don't know if he added any tariffs, which he also campaigned on, but that's more likely to hurt consumers than help.
I can't wait to see what happens on day two. Last time he was elected I was sure that the checks and balances would keep him from doing too much damage. It seems he's figured out how to do more in the four years since he left that first term.
