Use A Cookie To Remember Accepted Cookies
There's little more that frustrates me than this Internet-wide cookie warning and acceptance nonsense.
It's all California's fault, and some stuff in the EU before them, that we all have to endure the cookie warnings. I think it's just plain dumb. It's mostly because it's easier (as in lazier) to make a site work the same for everyone. I suppose it's in case I might be a person covered by the CCPA law or one of the EU laws, even if the Internet doesn't report my location or other meta data as someone working in someplace covered by the laws. Or maybe it's forward-looking, as it's possible other places will add similar laws in the future.
It stems from a good place, I get that. Privacy is important, and I appreciate the attempts to make it known how and what information about me and my interactions with a site might be, and who has access to it. Further, it's a great idea to offer a mechanism for that site to obfuscate their data and forget who I am.
I'm fine with the concepts. I'm less happy with the execution.
I went to a site today that I visited yesterday, and have visited many times in the past. The site offered me their reasons for cookies, and allowed me to accept some or all or none. I accepted them all. The site doesn't know who I am, beyond the cookie, my IP address, and meta data they can gather from what I do on the site. I don't have an account with them or need to authenticate. I may have interactions with other scripts or assets they use, for example a Google ad, but those should be accessible only by the cookie owner, Google in that example, and not the site containing the ad.
But still, whatever...I said you could use the cookies, so remember that I did that, and quit bothering me about it already! I don't live in California or the EU, and frankly am not covered by any "forget me" or other Internet privacy laws.
Regardless, I already said it was OK, so remember that I said that and let it be accepted until and unless you change the reasons for the cookies.
