Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)
Neflix delivered this surprising knee-slapper.
This funny little (post-)college stoner film gives us a little peek into the current young adult psyche and scene as we follow two evidently recent college graduates on their quest for cheeseburgers after getting recklessly stoned.
Normally I'm not one for stoner films, although in reflection of that comment, I did find Cheech and Chong pretty funny, and I do own and occasionally enjoy Animal House. I can't really relate to the stoner scene, 'cause I've never been in the state, but I've done my share of more legal partying, perhaps stretching the "legal" part of that statement as I passed some limits...
In this film we find Kumar, a recent med-school graduate, frustrated at interviewing for jobs, and Harold, an entry level data processor at a brokerage, on the weekend looking for a good time. They get stoned, and decide the solutions to their problems are within the steamy goodness at White Castle. They jaunt over to their local establishment only to find it's been replaced by a modern burger joint, who's friendly window helper agrees isn't nearly as good (as he threatens to burn the place to the ground). They set off for someplace apparently not in their neighborhood, get lost, have little adventures, and eventually get their burgers.
Along the way they run into a definitely not "Doogie" Neil Patrick Harris. He's a surprising hoot.
The film has no real plot, other than stoners getting stuck in unrealistic situations, and little character development, as they do indeed find solace in sandwiches, but the bits have their moments, and on the whole, it made for a good "free" rental. Recommended viewing if nothing else is on, and you happen upon it; I don't think it's worth going out of your way.
