AMD64 Balks at Ubuntu 5.10
Installation seemed so quick, and now so painful.
After downloading the Ubuntu release CD image, burning it, and restarting the AMD64 to free the LiveCD, I was hopeful. The installation was familiar and quick. It asked what language I wanted, what region I was in, and what my time zone was. I was very careful with the disk partitioner to select the partition I'd previously confirmed was the unused SuSE 32-bit installation, as well as the /home, /boot, and the Windows partitions. The installation copied and copied, and politely prompted me to reboot.
As expected, the GRUB installation overwrote the previous menu, so the SuSE 64-bit was not in the menu; no biggie, I'll add that later. I allowed it to continue to the pre-selected Ubuntu default, only to have it fail saying it couldn't mount the partition.
I had to turn in and leave it at that. This weekend, though, watch out, PC. If it doesn't happen fast, I'm installing Solaris and relegating you to the basement where you'll be reconfigured for fast database serving!
