Touching The Void (2003)
This movie was recommended by my pal Kurt. I recommend it now, to you.
It's a re-enacted documentary of a couple of climber's experiences while a tragic accident occurred scaling a mountain in Peru. Of course, they both survive, so there's little spoiler to the telling. It's really about their perception of events and Joe's will and spirit to survive.
These climbing pals, Joe and Simon, scale a mountain in Peru. On the return to the base after reaching the peak, Joe slips and breaks his leg; he falls in such a way that his shin slams into his thigh, splitting the bone the long way. Ouch. The story is told by going back and forth between the actual people and their reenactment counterparts, so we get both perspectives on the same timeline.
The come up with a scheme where they can use the three-hundred feet of rope they have to lower Joe a bit, he'd secure himself, then Simon would climb down to meet him and they'd repeat. On one of the extensions, Joe reaches the end of a cliff and falls off. The rope catches him and he's left hanging. He attempts to climb the rope back onto the cliff, but hasn't got the dexterity to get it done.
After some hours of this, fearing his friend is already dead, fearing for his own life as the weather turns against them and the day wanes, Simon cuts the rope, sending Joe falling. Simon is then able to practically walk to the base camp.
Miraculously Joe survives the fall. He finds himself precariously balanced on ice over another fall into a crevasse. He cannot get himself up, so he starts working his way down. Eventually he finds an opening to the outside, and he manages to crawl down the mountain and back to the base camp.
