Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor!
Well, on this day, 1941.
It's the 64th anniversary of the attack that pushed America deep into World War II.
What did they call the war before then? America was involved as a supplier of goods to our then-future allies, including air raiders to the Pacific theatre to help fight the Japanese in their attempt to take over China and the rest of Eastern Asia, and pilots to help the RAF bomb Germany in their attempt to take over Western Europe, but we weren't "officially" in the war until after Japan declared war a couple hours after they ambushed the Navy at Pearl Harbor.
My grandfather, dad's dad, fought in the Pacific. He earned a purple heart after being shot off a telephone pole, or so the story goes. He made it back in the right number of pieces to impress my grandmother, and help continue the family tree far enough to hit my branch.
I certainly mean no disrespect, but it makes me wonder how things would be different if it hand't happened. I'm sure it wasn't anyone's intention, but it may be said that if it weren't for WWII my grandfather might not have served, and he wouldn't have been so dashing in his uniform leading to his impression of that hottie from Wisconsin that ended up being my grandmother.
If Japan had stayed away from Hawaii that fateful Sunday morning, I might not be here, or at least be who I am today. Thanks, I guess?
