Failure to Launch (2006)
I was reminded that we saw this movie in the theater, and before Inside Man.
It's a little love story. The trailers told it all, and the details are left for the movie.
Matthew McConaughey plays Tripp, a thirty-something who still lives at home with his parents (Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates). He's a boat broker with a seemingly great lifestyle, who uses his parents as the springboard to break up with his girlfriends when they start to get a little too needy. He's got a couple of live-at-home friends who enjoy similar benefits of living with their parents, but with different purposes as we learn in the movie.
Sarah Jessica Parker plays Paula, a professional interventionalist who seems to specialize in getting lads to move from their parent's homes. She's hired by Tripp's parents to carefully and lovingly wean him from his easy life.
Of course, as they spend time together they fall for each other. In her professional capacity she toughs out the meet-the-parents break-up spring board, but doesn't wean him from the home as she plans.
Only when Tripp finds out the subterfuge worked against him does he finally leave home. With this he also severs his relationship with Paula, but much to his dismay, and to the dissatisfaction of both of their circles of friends.
Of course, since it's a Hollywood love story, the friends and parents band together to force Tripp and Paula to work out the issue of how they met, admit their feelings, and move on happily ever after. Well, at least until the end of the film.
The movie was full of humourous blips and credible insight into fairly solid characters. Enjoyable enough to recommend, if you're into date films.
