Sideways (2004)
The wife asked to move this one up in the Netflix queue, 'cause she likes Sandra Oh, and had heard if you like her, you'll like this movie.
Sandra Oh, while integral, doesn't make the movie. The movie's good, don't get me wrong, and Sandra Oh is good in the movie, but she isn't the reason to like it.
The movie follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), a depressed English teacher longing to be an author, who has recently divorced, as he and an old college roommate, Jack (Thomas Haden Church), depart on a last week of hanging out before Jack's Saturday wedding. They head to wine country, where Miles is a regular.
Miles' standard stops include a restaurant where they meet Maya (Virginia Madsen) with whom Miles has been smitten, but believes is unobtainable, and a winery where Stephanie (Sandra Oh) works. Jack, a former soap star turned voice-over and commercial actor, has an easy time with the women, and turns the week into a long double-date with the two gals.
This romantic drama follows Miles as he overcomes some of his depression, especially while he deals with the news that his ex-wife, for whom he still pined, has remarried. The guys never tell the girls about the wedding, which, of course, turns badly for the guys when Miles slips the news to Maya.
It's a little dark, so we're not sure that it's going to turn out in the end. A good film, 'though probably not worth the buzz it did receive, including five Oscar nominations with one win, and about a hundred other nods.
I found it interesting that this film was billed as a comedy, and agree it was not worth the buzz.
