Exciting Near Comeback After Miserable Start
PJ Walters started the Twins off, pitching against the Phillies last night. He left the game after pitching to only four batters (all of whom got hits and eventually scored). His shoulder wasn't working right, and today he's going to get an MRI to see what's wrong. At the end of the inning, the Phillies had run up six runs.
The Twins held the Phillies to just three more runs in the game, for a total of nine. The Twins lso racked up eight runs of their own during the game.
In the realm of "if and should have," the Twins could have conceiveably won, had Walters not pitched that first bit of the game. Perhaps he felt a little off during warm-up. I don't fault anyone for being injured, or really even for trying to work through an ache or pain, but sometimes it's better to beg off than to suffer through.
There was a homer, hit by Mayberry, the 8th batter in the top of the first, so arguably the game could have ended closer to four Philly runs. That would have meant a win for the Twins.
Oh, and good on former Twin Thome for hitting the game-winner, only his second homer for the season.
