Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, a confirmed (well, he did plead guilty) mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks wants to be put to death, according to the NY Times. I'm not shying away from capital punishment at all, especially when evidence and confessions are rock-solid, but in this case I think the best thing we can do for the world, and the worst punishment he can receive, is a life-long prison sentence.

Let him fade into insignificance sitting in his cell, watching American cable television. Heck, protect him from harm, and even treat his ails as he ages. Show him that he didn't win, he doesn't really matter any more, and no one cares.
