Solaris on Sparc Functional
With a little help I was finally able to get my server's firmware upgraded, and with that I was able to very quickly get Solaris 11.2 running. Now I need to plan out the VMs and port the services from the underpowered machine.
One of the tasks of the new server is to replace the old dual-core 8GB server running this and other websites, and the database and e-mail and other underlying services that go with it, and the log analyzer and other things that have no other homes. This involves getting the VMs running with separate IPs, and a private network for the service communications, and finally breaking out the app servers behind the web servers!
Oh, and I'll need to add some storage. For now, or rather as soon as I port the services over, I'll probably use NFS to reach the old server and use it as a file server, but the new server has unused bays just begging for me to find some SAS drives to fill it.
And then to cut the cable cable. Once the server is fully functional, the traffic should be going through the DSL Internet and not through the cable Internet. Since that's the only thing we've got the cable for, it can go, too. One less bill, a few less routers.
Any tips on getting the firmware for the old Sun T5220? I bought one on eBay and find myself unable to install Solaris because of the firmware. OpenBSD Sparc did install so it is not a total door stop but I would rather run Solaris.
